An opinion piece for Point of Information in which I strongly disagree not only with the effects of cutting the Overseas Development Budget, but seek to add to the argument by addressing the decision-making process that underpinned the decision. Essentially it is my view that the cutting the Aid budget was a politically-motivated move that was not made with respect to an honest evaluation of our aid policy. Instead, it was little more than a token cut, made to appease fiscal hawks and small-state, neoliberally oriented Conservative MPs and donors in the midst of unprecedented fiscal spending. The price to pay for a very limited political win will be the suffering of many of the world's poorest, and the compromising of the vacuous 'Global Britain' message which the government continues to push.
